Background

Kayla Jean Mueller was born on August 14, 1988, in Prescott, Arizona. She attended Northern Arizona University, where she studied political science and worked with humanitarian organizations. From a young age, Mueller was drawn to helping others, volunteering with organizations that served vulnerable populations.

Before traveling to the Middle East, Mueller worked with humanitarian organizations in India, Palestine, and Israel. She was particularly moved by the plight of refugees and displaced people, leading her to travel to Turkey in 2013 to work with Syrian refugees. In August 2013, she was kidnapped while leaving a hospital in Aleppo, Syria, where she had been providing humanitarian aid.
